National:
  • President Ram Nath Kovind, who is Czech Republic on the last leg of 3-nation Europe tour, met Prime Minister Andrej Babis of Czech Republic. Earlier on Friday, India and the Czech Republic signed five agreements as part of President Kovind's visit.India-Czech Republic ink five pacts.
  • The next edition of Aero India will be held in Bengaluru, Karnataka from February 20 to 24, 2019, Defence Ministry announced. This five-day event will combine a major trade exhibition for the aerospace and defence industries with public air shows.
  • The Odisha Assembly on Thursday passed a resolution for the establishment of a Legislative Council in the state. The resolution got support of 104 of 147 members of the Assembly.
  • State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corp (ONGC) has made oil and gas discoveries in Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal that may potentially open up two new sedimentary basins in the country, the firm's director for exploration has said.

International:
  • The three-day World Hindu Congress has begun in Chicago.Over 2000 delegates from across the globe are participating in this mega event.The theme of World Hindu Congress is 'think collectively, achieve valiantly'.

Appointments:
  • State Bank of India on Friday said the Government has appointed Anshula Kant as Managing Director of the Bank.With this appointment SBI now has four MDs - PK Gupta, DK Khara and Arijit Basu.

Importance of the day:
  • International Literacy Day, celebrated annually on 8 September, is an opportunity for Governments, civil society and stakeholders to highlight improvements in world literacy rates, and reflect on the world's remaining literacy challenges. The issue of literacy is a key component of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.This year’s theme is ‘Literacy and skills development.’ 

Agreement:
  • Stepping up space cooperation, India and France Thursday inked an agreement to collaborate on Gaganyaan, ISRO's first human space mission. The two countries have formed a working group for the project.

Financial:
  • The Union government on Thursday doubled the pecuniary limit to Rs. 20 lakh for filing loan recovery application in the Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRTs) by banks and financial institutions, to help reduce pendency of such cases.

Sports:
  • Indian shooter Hriday Hazarika notched up a gold medal in the 10 m air rifle junior men's event of the ISSF World Championships in South Korea.The Indian team, comprising Hazarika, Divyansh Panwar and Arjun Babuta, finished fourth with a combined total of 1872.3.
