National:
  • The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Hon’ble Defence Minister Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, met on 25 Aug 2018 and accorded approval for procurement for the Services amounting to approximately Rs. 46,000 crores.The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), in a landmark decision today, approved procurement of 111 Utility Helicopters for the Indian Navy at a cost of over Rs. 21,000 crores.This is the first project under the MoD’s prestigious Strategic Partnership (SP) Model that aims at providing significant fillip to the Government’s ‘Make in India’ programme.
  • Former President Pranab Mukherjee on August 24, 2018 launched the National Electoral Transformation  (NETA) mobile application to rate Members of Parliament (MPs) and Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs).
  • In a big step forward to strengthen the startup ecosystem in Rajasthan, the Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje launched India’s largest business incubator the Bhamashah Techno Hub in Jaipur.

International:
  • For the first time, the militaries of India and Pakistan are taking part in a mega anti-terror drill of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Russia aimed at expanding cooperation among the member countries to deal with the growing menace of terrorism and extremism. 
  • India and Singapore have signed the Second Protocol amending the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement in New Delhi which will boost bilateral trade between the two countries.

Science and Technology:
  • For the first time, India's only aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya will be fitted with a marine hydraulic system to boost the air operations of the ship.Technodinamika, a subsidiary of Russia's Rostec State Corporation, will install the system in the Indian Navy ship by May 2019, the defence firm's chief executive Igor Nasenkov said.

New signings:
  • Prasar Bharati and Mizzima Media of Myanmar signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Friday. This will boost centuries old ties between India and Myanmar. It will also strengthen India's soft power in its neighbourhood.

Appointments:
  • Industry chamber Assocham today appointed former bureaucrat Uday Kumar Varma as its new Secretary General.He succeeds DS Rawat who held the position for nearly 14 years, Assocham said in a statement.

Sports:
  • Veteran Indian women's team pacer Jhulan Goswami on Thursday announced her retirement from T20 Internationals, effectively ruling her out for the ICC World T20 in West Indies in November.She played 68 T20 Internationals and took 56 wickets at an economy rate of 5.45.
