National:
  • The Indian and Thai armed forces on Sunday concluded a two-week long platoon level military exercise called 'Exercise Maitree 2018' in Jammu & Kashmir's Srinagar.The exercise was an annual event designed to strengthen the partnership between armies of the two countries. 
  • External Affairs Minister (EAM) Sushma Swaraj on Sunday inaugurated 'Panini Language Laboratory' at Mahatma Gandhi Institute (MGI) in Mauritius.The lab, gifted by the Indian government, will help MGI in teaching Indian languages in Mauritius.
  • Indigenously designed and developed guided bombs Smart Anti Airfield Weapon (SAAW) and anti-tank guided missile Helina were successfully tested at separate firing ranges in Rajasthan.

Financial news:
  • NABARD All India Financial Inclusion Survey (NAFIS), conducted by National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), was released by Dr. Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairman, NITI Aayog in New Delhi. Incidence of Indebtedness (IOI), which is a proportion of households having outstanding debt on the date of the survey, was 52.5 per cent and 42.8 per cent for agricultural and non-agricultural households, respectively.

Appointments:
  • Subhash Sheoratan Mundra has been appointed as Independent Director on the Board of Indiabulls Housing Finance for a period of three years, effective August 18 onwards.

Awards:
  • Delhi government’s additional director of health S.K. Arora has been awarded the prestigious WHO World No Tobacco Day 2018 Award for his extraordinary contribution towards tobacco control.
  • Former Army chief Gen Dalbir Singh has been awarded with United States (US) 'Legion of Merit'.The award was given to Singh for exceptionally meritorious service as Chief of Army Staff from August 2014 to December 2016.

Sports:
  • Australia left-arm pacer Mitchell Johnson has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The 36-year-old, who went on to play in T20 tournaments across the globe after quitting international cricket in November 2015, last played in this year's IPL for the Kolkata Knight Riders.
  • Bajrang Punia handed India their first gold at Asian Games with 11-8 win over Daichi Takatani in the final of 65kg. This was Bajrang’s first gold at Asian Games. After taking an early 6-0 lead, Bajrang gave up six points. But then made the lead 10-8 before a failed Japan challenge gave him one more points. Pawan Kumar lost his bronze medal bout in 86kg category.
  • Obituary:
  • Uri Avnery, a trailblazing Israeli journalist and peace activist and one of the first to openly advocate for a Palestinian state, died Monday at the age of 94.
