MEGA LIFT IRRIGATION SCHEME by ODISHA GOVERNEMNT

Introduction:
On 24th December, 2016 the
Odisha Government approved a new scheme “Mega
Lift Irrigation Scheme” to providing irrigation to the farmers in the
upland areas by lifting water from river, which could not be irrigated by
normal means of flow irrigation. This scheme was inaugurated by Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik.
The scheme was named after Parbati Giri by the Chief Minister of state at a
cabinet meeting. The state cabinet approved
the proposal to award works for 54 more schemes under the Mega Lift Irrigation Scheme in four clusters to irrigate about 62,000 hectares. Projects having irrigation mandate area within 500 to 2000 hectares are moved to be taken up under this scheme. The projects will cost Rs. 1796.27crore.

Objectives:
To
provide irrigation to the farmers in the upland areas by lifting water from
rivers and reservoirs;
Key Features:
- The 54 mega LI points to be developed in four clusters will help farmers in 23 blocks of five districts namely-- Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Ganjam, Kalahandi and Nuapada;
- The Government approved tender for 13 Mega Lift Irrigation Schemes with a total command area of 19,400 hectares in Mayurbhanj and Keonjhar districts of the state at a cost of Rs. 518crore.
- The schemes will cover 23 blocks in five districts of Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Kalahandi, Ganjam, and Nuapada. Larsen and Toubro (L&T), Megha Engineering and GVPR Engineering Limited have been selected as the executing agencies in these four clusters.
- The scheme take into consideration lifting of water mostly from surface water sources to a delivery chamber at higher altitudes and providing irrigation to the command below through pipes under gravity.
- These schemes have been grouped into 15 clusters to facilitate tendering, execution and power connectivity point of view.
- The State Government took the decision to mark respect for Girls’ contribution to the freedom movement and service to the poor and needy.
- On completion of the project 3.36lakh population of the city would be benefitted by 2021 and 5.84lakh population will be benefitted by 2048. M/S Gharpure Engg. And Constriction Pvt. Ltd was awarded for the execution of sewerage work in Sambalpur city at a cost of Rs. 324.31crore.
- The Cabinet meeting approved the lowest bid of Rs. 517.77crore by GVPR Engineers Limited.
Parbati Giri:
- Prabati Giri, a prominent female freedom fighter was born on 19th January, 1926 in Samlaipadar village near Bijepur of the present Bargarh district and undivided Sambalpur district in Odisha.
- She is fondly remembered as Mother Teresa of Odisha.
- She was only year 16 when she was in the forefront of agitation following Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India Movement.
- She was imprisoned for 2 years because of her anti-British government activities.
