National:
  • The Union Government has unlocked green funds worth over Rs 66,000 crore to increase the country’s forest cover.The fund is an accumulated amount of money, which user agencies have been depositing as compensation for diverting forest land for non-forest purposes, including industries and infrastructure, since the past 10 years.
  • Union  Minister for Electronics & Information Technology   Ravi Shankar Prasad will release the document ‘Digital North East Vision 2022’ this afternoon in Guwahati. The Vision Document will be released in the presence of Chief Ministers and IT Ministers of North East States.The Document emphasizes leveraging digital technologies to transform the lives of people of the northeast and enhance the ease of living.

Agreement:
  • Exim Bank of India has signed a multilateral cooperation agreement with member development banks of BRICS to undertake “collaborative research” in distributed ledger/blockchain technology.The MoU — signed by Exim Bank Managing Director David Rasquinha — was an outcome of the discussions the member development banks had during their annual meeting, with the objective of strengthening the cooperation under the BRICS Interbank Cooperation Mechanism.

Science and Technology:
  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) on Sunday blasted off a $1.5 billion spacecraft toward the Sun on a historic mission to protect the Earth by unveiling the mysteries of dangerous solar storms.
  • India will launch its second lunar mission on 3 January next year to land on the moon with a lander and rover as per ISRO.
  • Humanity's first visit to a star began this weekend. NASA's Parker Solar Probe will explore the sun's atmosphere in a mission that launched early Sunday.This is the agency's first mission to the sun and its outermost atmosphere, the corona.

International:
  • Nepal-India Literature Festival 2018 has begun in Birgunj, Nepal.Inaugurating the festival Chief Minister of Province 2 Mohammad Lalbabu Raut said that it will play an important role in further strengthening Indo-Nepal ties.

Ranking:
  • Marie Curie, the pioneering scientist who was the first person to win two Nobel prizes, has topped a poll asking which woman has had the most significant impact on world history.
  • BBC History magazine compiled a list of “100 women who changed the world”, chosen by 10 experts, and asked its readers to help rank them.

Obituary:
  • Former Lok Sabha speaker Somnath Chatterjee passed away on Monday, 13 August at a Kolkata hospital. He was 89 years old.
