National:
  • The Naveen Patnaik government launched its own food security scheme on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on Tuesday, benefiting 25 lakh people who were left out of the National Food Security Act.The scheme will benefit 25 lakh vulnerable populace that were excluded from coverage.

Ranking:
  • Haryana’s Maharshi Dayanand University has been declared the cleanest government varsity by the HRD Ministry, followed by Guru Nanak Dev University in Punjab’s Amritsar. Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar announced the “Swachh Campus rankings” under different categories on Monday.

  • Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI), has launched a national level entrepreneurship awareness campaign--Udyam Abhilasha, in 115 aspirational districts identified by NITI Aayog in 28 States reaching to around 15,000 youth.

Financial News:
  • Alibaba and SoftBank-backed Paytm on Monday said it registered over 137 million UPI transactions in September, becoming the leading contributor to Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments with over 33 per cent of the overall market share.

Appointment:
  • Iraq's new President Barham Saleh has named veteran Shia Islamist politician Adel Abdul Mahdi as prime minister-designate, ending months of deadlock.
  • Justice Ranjan Gogoi has sworn-in as new Chief Justice of India. He take charge as 46th Chief Justice of India.

Awards:
  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2018 with one half to Frances H. Arnold (USA)"for the directed evolution of enzymes" and the other half jointly to George P. Smith (USA) and Sir Gregory P. Winter (UK) "for the phage display of peptides and antibodies".
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was honoured with United Nations' highest environmental award- UNEP Champions of the Earth, along with French President Emmanuel Macron in New Delhi. The award was presented by UN SecrSecretary-Generalonio Guterres.

  • Australian midfielder Mile Jedinak announced his retirement from international football.The Aston Villa player led his country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and this year’s tournament in Russia.
  • Russia goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev is retiring from international soccer after leading the national side as captain to this year’s World Cup quarter-finals on home soil.
  • The International Cricket Councilreleased the updated version of the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) System along with the new ICC Code of Conduct and ICC Playing Conditions.
  • These will come into effect from Sunday, 30 September, when the first ODI between South Africa and Zimbabwe will be played in Kimberley.
  • Teenage shooting star Manu Bhaker was named as the flag-bearer of the Indian contingent for the 3rd Youth Olympic Games to be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from October 6-18.
