  • Athletes from Australia and the rest of Oceania have been invited to compete at the 2022 Asian Games, Australian Olympic chief John Coates said Thursday, days after the Olympic Council of Asia said such a move was unlikely.
  • The OCA’s invite to theAsian Games in China’s Hangzhou is for selected sports only to enable regional athletes to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics through Asian competition, Coates said.
  • Oceania -- Australia, New Zealand and a swathe of Pacific islands -- has not taken part in the regional Olympics before, but sporting ties with Asia have been growing.
US-based electric vehicles manufacturer Proterra claimed Electric bus sets record with 1,771 km-trip on single charge
  • US-based electric vehicles manufacturer Proterra on Tuesday claimed that the company's Catalyst E2 Max electric bus has set a world record by driving 1,771 km (1,101 miles) on a single charge. The bus was driving on a test track, with no passengers, or stops. The E2 Max bus, which is 40 feet long, has a battery with 660 kWh capacity.
Bangladesh imposes mobile phone ban on Rohingya refugees
  • Bangladesh has banned telecommunication companies from selling mobile phone connections to Rohingya refugees, citing security concerns for the latest restrictions, officials said Sunday.
  • Bangladesh’s four mobile phone providers were threatened with fines if they provide any of the nearly 4,30,000 newly-arrived refugees from Myanmar with phone plans while the ban is in force.
  • “For the time being, they [Rohingya] can’t buy any SIM cards,” Enayet Hossain, a senior officer at the Telecoms Ministry, told AFP on Sunday.
ICC launches anti-corruption probe into Sri Lanka cricket
  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) has launched an anti-corruption investigation in Sri Lanka but did not specify if any particular series involving the country is under the scanner.
  • The ICC’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) officers had recently visited the country as part of the probe, the world body said in a statement.
  • “The ICC Anti-Corruption Unit works to uphold integrity in cricket and this includes conducting investigations where there are reasonable grounds to do so,” ICC’s General Manager - ACU, Alex Marshall, said in a statement.

Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu is Mizoram’s first woman minister since 1987
  • The lone woman legislator in Mizoram Vanlalawmpuii Chawngthu has become Mizoram’s first woman minister since the 1987 state assembly elections, after she was inducted to Lal Thanhawla’s cabinet on Friday .
  • Chawngthu was sworn in as a minister by Mizoram governor Lt. Gen. Nirbhay Sharma (Rtd) during a searing-in-ceremony held at Raj Bhavan. She is the second woman in Mizoram to hold ministerial post after Lalhlimpuii Hmar, who was made a minister in 1987.
  • Chawngthu will hold the rank of Minister of State in Lal Thanhawla’s government. With Chawngthu, Mizoram now has 12 ministers.
  • Earlier on September 20, senior Congress leader and Aizawl South III assembly constituency MLA, K S Thanga was sworn in as minister in the Congress government.
  • Meanwhile, the 38-year-old Mizoram Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (MPYCC) president, Chawngthu joined the Congress party and won the Hrangturzo by-poll with a margin of 2503 votes to retain the seat for the ruling Congress in May 2014 as Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla vacated the seat after winning it along with Serchhip in 2013 assembly polls.
Former home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi to be next Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) 
  • Former home secretary Rajiv Mehrishi will take over as the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) tomorrow succeeding Shashi Kant Sharma, officials said today.
  • Mehrishi, 62, would be administered the oath of office and secrecy by President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan tomorrow, they said. His appointment has been cleared by the government, the officials said. 
  • Mehrishi, a 1978 batch (retired) Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Rajasthan cadre, completed his two-year fixed term as the home secretary last month.
  • Sharma, who had taken over as the CAG on May 23, 2013, demitted office on Friday, they said. Sharma was defence secretary prior to his appointment as the CAG. Mehrishi will have a tenure of about three years.

  • State Bank of India (SBI) on Friday launched India’s first bond index series for overseas investors at the London Stock Exchange (LSE).
  • The FTSE SBI Bond Index Series, launched by India’s largest commercial bank along with global index and data provider FTSE Russell, is positioned as a first-of-its-kind transparent benchmark for investors in international markets to analyse India’s government bond market.

Rio Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu has jumped two places to the second spot in the BWF women's singles ranking.
  • This is the second time that Sindhu is world number two after being at the position for a week in April this year. Sindhu has won three international titles this year, including the Korea Open, which she won last week.
Chinese developer Hui Ka Yan becomes Asia's richest man
  • Chinese real estate giant Evergrande Group's Chairman Hui Ka Yan has become Asia's richest man with a net worth of 41.1 billion dollar. Evergrande's stock, which increased by nearly five times in a year, climbed by 4.6% on Thursday. This puts him ahead of investment major Tencent Holdings' Chairman Ma Huateng, whose net worth is 39 billion dollar.

The launch of the electric bus service before Dussehra festivities in Kullu could benefit tourists, who otherwise had to struggle to get permits for taking their vehicles to Rohtang Pass.
  • In a boost for green transport in Himachal Pradesh, Transport Minister G S Bali Thursday flagged off the country’s first electric bus service for Rohtang Pass, a tourist destination near Manali. Bali termed it a pioneering initiative to check vehicular pollution at Rohtang Pass in the wake of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) orders to restrict the number of diesel and petrol operated tourist vehicles in the ecologically fragile area.
PM Narendra Modi Releases Postage Stamp On Lord Ram, but this is the first of its kind stamp, which depicts different aspects of his life," PM Modi said.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi today released a postage stamp on different aspects of Lord Ram's life at the historic Tulsi Manas Mandir Varanasi, and said he was a source of inspiration for every individual. "There have been many stamps on Lord Ram, but this is the first of its kind stamp, which depicts different aspects of his life. This has not been done in the past. I am happy that I have got the opportunity to do this from the holy soil of Manas," he said.
West Bengal gets $300 million ADB loan to carry forward fiscal reforms 
  • Multilateral funding agency ADB today said it has sanctioned a USD 300 million loan facility for carrying forward fiscal reforms in West Bengal.
  • The board of Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a loan of USD 300 million to continue a comprehensive series of fiscal reforms in West Bengal to bring about more accessible, affordable, and high quality public services, ADB said in a release.
  • West Bengal, for the first time in 2012 had received a USD 400 million from ADB -- its first policy based lending -- with an aim to create a fiscal space necessary to sustain higher public investment in the eastern India. 
Telangana government has released a new music video to celebrate the nine-day Bathukamma festival, which began on Wednesday.
  • In the video, MP Kavitha is seen along with television anchor Udaya Bhanu celebrating the festival. Notably, the state government recently began free distribution of over one crore sarees for women below the poverty line on the occasion of Bathukamma.
NITI Aayog, IRF to Work For Intelligent Transport System in India
  • The NITI Aayog has signed an agreement with Geneva-based International Road Federation for cooperation in the field of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and to design a policy framework for the same, a statement said on Friday. The National ITS policy will cover various sectors including traffic management, parking management, electronic enforcement of traffic rules and regulations. It would also cover fleet management and monitoring, and innovation and education in the field of ITS, the statement said. 
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu declares 2017 as e-pragati year
  • Addressing the second day of the Collectors' Conference here, Naidu said that all districts must come under the purview of the flagship programme that will help the government make real-time governance.
  • "We have declared 2017 as e-pragati year. That would be taken to the ground-level. All districts must come under the purview of real time governance. If any college students are trained on e-pragati, the program can be taken to basic level," he added. The Chief Minister also inaugurated the Andhra Pradesh Sports Policy 2017.

  • The Qsuite allows passengers to recline two middle seats into a flat bed, with partition panels for privacy
  • New feature is being trialed on a 777 service from Heathrow, but could be rolled out to Paris and New York
  • Four passengers are also able to transform their seats to form a private area, complete with TV screens

The UAE's flag carrier Etihad Airways launches 'fly now pay later' scheme 
  • The UAE's flag carrier Etihad Airways has launched a 'fly now and pay later' scheme which provides people an option of paying the ticket fare in monthly instalments, the airline said.
  • The Abu Dhabi-based airline said the initiative is designed to allow families to book flights with convenience as payment plans have been tailored to meet their requirements.
  • Etihad Airways is the first in the Gulf region to offer fully automated online instalment plans after partnering with PayFort, a leading online payment service provider in the Arab world, the airline said in a statement.

World's largest plane fires up all 6 engines for the first time ahead of 2019 flight
  • Named Stratolaunch, the colossal aircraft successfully fired all six of its Pratt and Whitney turbofan engines - each weighing 4,000kg - for the first time this week. The six-engine plane has a wingspan of 385 feet which is longer than the length of a football field.
  • The plane is the vision of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen who wants it to act as a giant air pad in the sky, allowing payloads to reach space faster and at a lower cost than existing technologies. It is designed to carry a maximum takeoff weight of 1.3 million pounds.
  • Instead of a satellite, the Stratolaunch airplane could launch a Dream Chaser spaceship. This could act as a mini-shuttle to reach low Earth orbit destinations and return astronauts or payloads to a runway within 24 hours.

India gets first high-power electric locomotive for freight trains from France
  • India’s dream for high horse power locomotive moved closer to reality with the arrival of the first bodyshell of 12000 HP loco from Alstom France at Kolkata port on Wednesday.
  • This first-of-its-kind high-power electric locomotive will be used to haul freight trains at twice the existing speed by next year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the third Mahamana Express running between Vadodara and Varanasi
  • While the prime minister inaugurated the first run of the train remotely from here, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal joined him via video link from Vadodara along with senior officials of the ministry.
  • The maiden journey of the train was from Vadodara to Varanasi. PM Modi won from both places in the 2014 elections, but chose to represent Varanasi in Parliament.
Make in India Scorpene submarine INS Kalvari ready for Indian Navy; set to be commissioned by PM Modi soon
  • Mazagon Docks Ltd; (MDL) will soon hand over INS Kalvari to the Indian Navy—the first of six Scorpene submarines being built in India in collaboration with French shipbuilder, Naval Group (formerly DCNS). Though the dates are not confirmed yet, the first Scorpene submarine is likely to be commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi—it will be a re-affirmation of India’s capability to build submarines and a major boost for the ‘Make in India’ programme of the government. With 30% indigenous components on board, the Made-in-India submarine is part of the ongoing project for the construction of six Scorpene-class submarines at MDL in Mumbai on transfer of technology from the French company.
Chinese and Australian ground forces started their bilateral joint training named "Exercise Panda-Kangaroo 2017" on September 10 at a training ground of the PLA Southern Theater Command in Kunming, capital city of southwest China's Yunnan Province.
  • This is the first joint training held in China by Chinese and Australian armies. The two ground forces have conducted such joint training in 2015 and 2016 in Australia.
  • This joint training, focusing on mountain comprehensive skills, aims to practice and improve the ground forces' comprehensive skills in mountainous areas.
  • China and Australia each sent 10 personnel to participate in the training. The Chinese participants are selected from the army of the PLA Southern Theater Command.
  • During the over ten-day activity, participants from both sides will undergo such wild survival training items as marching, overcoming natural obstacles, making and using floating equipment, camping and picnicking in complex and unfamiliar mountainous area.
Schemes / Programme
Union Govt. decided to extend interest subsidy of Rs2.60 lakh on home loans for the Middle Income Group (MIG) up to March 2019 under the NDA government’s flagship ‘Housing for All’ programme.
  • Under the new scheme, those with an annual income of up to Rs12 lakh can avail a 4% interest subsidy on a loan of Rs9 lakh while those with an income up to Rs18 lakh will get an interest subsidy of 3% on a loan of Rs18 lakh.
  • Last December, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced two new components of credit-linked subsidy to help the middle class, who till then were not included in the NDA government’s flagship housing programme.
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, dedicated to the nation, the Deendayal Hastkala Sankul a trade facilitation centre for handicrafts at Varanasi.
  • The Prime Minister had laid the foundation stone of this Centre in November 2014. Today, he visited the Centre, and was given an overview of the facilities developed there, before arriving on the dais for the dedication.
  • He described the Trade Facilitation Centre as one of the biggest projects for Varanasi for a long time. He said this Centre would help the artisans and weavers showcase their skills to the world, and facilitate a brighter future for them. He asked the people to encourage all tourists to visit this Centre. He said this would result in increased demand of handicrafts, and also boost the tourism potential of Varanasi, and indeed the economy of the city.

  • Infosys Finacle, part of EdgeVerve Systems, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Infosys, today announced a partnership with ToneTag, a provider of near-field communications, payments and location-based services using sound waves. 
  • Through this partnership, Finacle and ToneTag will offer a joint solution that will leverage the latter's sound wave technology to enable proximity payments and interactions.

'Newton' is India's official entry for Oscars 2018 
  • The race to Oscars 2018 has begun. And India, too, has finalised its entry. Yes, it's official now that Amit Masurkar's 'Newton' will be the Indian entry at the Oscars next year. 
  • The Film Federation Of India (FFI), in an official statement on Friday confirmed the nomination. The Hindi movie was the unanimous choice of FFI's selection committee, headed by Telugu producer C V Reddy. 
  • "'Newton' has been selected as India's official entry to the Oscars. It was unanimously chosen from 26 entries this year," FFI secretary general Supran Sen said. 
  • The National Award-winning actor Rajkummar Rao plays the lead in this indie drama. The film also stars Anjali Patil, Pankaj Tripathi and veteran thespian Raghubir Yadav of 'Mungeri Lal' fame. 
Eminent scientist, Professor C.N.R Rao, has become the first Asian to be chosen for the prestigious Von Hippel Award for his immense contribution in materials research.
  • The award is the US-based Materials Research Society’s (MRS) highest honour.
  • It recognises “those qualities most prized by materials scientists and engineers - brilliance and originality of intellect, combined with vision that transcends the boundaries of conventional scientific disciplines,” according to the MRS.
  • The award citation noted Mr. Rao’s immense work on novel functional materials, including nanomaterials (having particles of nanoscale dimensions), graphene (the strongest and thinnest material) and 2D materials, superconductivity, and colossal magnetoresistance (change in electrical resistance of a material in a magnetic field).

  • GQ Men of the Year Awards took place yesterday and it had the who’s who of the film industry in attendance. To say that the men looked dapper and the women looked gorgeous in their respective ensembles would most certainly be an understatement.

Laver Cup 2017: Roger Federer & Rafael Nadal win first doubles match in Prague.
  • Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal played as doubles partners for the first time on the second day of the inaugural Laver Cup in Prague.
  • Swiss Federer and Spaniard Nadal, who have won a combined 35 Grand Slam titles, are part of a Europe side playing a World team over three days.
  • They beat Americans Sam Querrey and Jack Sock 6-4 1-6 10-5 to give Team Europe a 9-3 lead. The winner is the first to 13 points, with 12 points available on Sunday.
India’s Mudit Dani wins Under-23 table tennis tournament in US, in the Butterfly Badger Open in Milwaukee, one of United States’ top table tennis tournaments.
  • Mumbai’s Mudit Dani continued his good run on the world stage, winning the under-23 title in the prestigious 2017 Butterfly Badger Open in Milwaukee, in Wisconsin (United States) on Sunday.
  • Playing in a highly competitive field in the $16,000 prize money tournament, India’s rising table tennis player Mudit Dani beat Polish-born Wojciech Wolski 9-11, 11-7, 8-11, 12-10, 11-7 in the final to clinch the title, according to a press release.
Obituary 
Former world middleweight champion boxer Jake LaMotta has died due to complications from pneumonia, aged 95.
  • Real name Giacobbe LaMotta, the American’s death was announced by a relatives on social media, with his eldest daughter Christi LaMotta paying tribute on Facebook. Her post, accompanied with a picture of him and the world middleweight championship, read: “Jake LaMotta July 10, 1922 - September 19, 2017. Rest in Peace Pop.”

A multi-agency exercise was conducted on the banks of Hussain Sagar Lake as the final event of ‘Pralay Sahayam’ in Hyderabad
  • The event demonstrated efforts of all central and state agencies, National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) and the Armed Forces towards jointly tackling an urban flooding scenario in Hyderabad. 
  • The Minister of State for Defence Dr. Subhash Bhamre who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, congratulated the organising committee for the successful conduct of the exercise. The Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana Shri Mohammad Mehmood Ali was the Guest of Honour. General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C) Southern Command Lt Gen PM Hariz was the conducting authority of the exercise. For the purpose of the exercise, Hussain Sagar Lake was transformed into urban colonies partly submerged under water, post heavy showers in the city.
India's largest jail gets its first open-air gymnasium
  • Tihar Jail, India's largest and most populated prison, has got its first open-air gymnasium to look after the fitness of prisoners. The gym, located in a park inside jail number 1, has four fitness equipment currently. Though timetables have been assigned for all prisoners, the gym is reportedly mostly used by elderly prisoners facing health problems like arthritis and obesity.
India name 21-member squad for FIFA U-17 World Cup, India have been drawn in Group A alongside USA, Colombia and Ghana in this tournament .
  • India today named a 21-member football team for the FIFA Under-17 World Cup to be held across six cities from October 6. India have been drawn in Group A alongside USA, Colombia and Ghana. The hosts face USA on October 6, followed by Colombia and Ghana on October 9 and October 12 respectively at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
  • "We believe that we are prepared for the FIFA U-17 World Cup We have worked hard and made progress, but at the same time we go directly to a high level competition against some of the best teams in the world," de Matos said in a release from All India Football Federation.

Govt unveils new PPP policy as part of push for affordable housing
  • The central government on Thursday announced new public private partnerships (PPP) to promote private investments in affordable housing in line with its Housing for All target by 2022.
  • Speaking at the Real Estate and Infrastructure Investors Summit 2017, organized by real estate body National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO), minister of housing and urban affairs Hardeep Singh introduced eight PPP options for the private sector to invest in affordable housing segment.
Books on Indian culture, morals now ‘must’ at railway platform kiosks. The Railway Board has instructed all general managers to ensure that such books are found in railway stalls, under its new Multi-Purpose Stall policy.
  • Books on Indian culture and morals are now to be displayed for sale at all platform kiosks, a new stall policy to all zonal railways has mandated.
  • In a commercial circular dated September 5, the Railway Board instructed all general managers to ensure that such books are found in railway stalls under the new Multi Purpose Stall (MPS) Policy.
  • “Zonal railways shall ensure that all MPS must display and sell books pertaining to Indian tradition, culture, values, morals and history,” the circular, a copy of which is with PTI, stated.
Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dharmendra Pradhan will inaugurate one of the ambitious programmes of the Centre — LPG Panchayat, aimed at encouraging rural communities to turn to clean fuel.
  • The Centre plans to organise one lakh LPG Panchayats across the country, where discussions will take place between officials of fuel companies and villagers on awareness and uses of the LPG.
  • The first LPG Panchayat will be held in Gandhinagar, where Pradhan will preside over the interaction between women using LPG under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana (PMUY) and the companies.
  • LPG Panchayats will bring together about 100 LPG users of an area and create an interactive platform to discuss safe and sustainable usage of LPG, its benefits and linkages between using clean fuel and empowering women, said Sanjiv Jain, state coordinator of oil marketing companies.
  • According to data shared by the oil marketing companies, so far three crore connections have been allotted under the PMUY against the target of five crore by 2019.
