SAURASHTRA NARMADA AVTARAN IRRIGATION SCHEME (SAUNI YOJANA)
Essential for all Upcoming Bank and SSC Exams
Introduction:
The
Government of India Lunched a new scheme named “Sauni Yojana- Sourashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation Scheme” on September, 2012. This scheme was
inaugurated by our Prime Minister Narendra
Modi. He launched phase-1 of the Link-2pipeline canal of the aspiring Saurashtra Narmada Avtaran Irrigation
(SAUNI) Yojana in Botad district, Gujarat. It has already been inaugurated
by Prime Minister at the Sandodara
Village of Jamnagar district in Gujarat. The Sourashtra region of
Gujarat was parched and was facing a huge water crisis. That’s why the first
phase of this program has been launched there.
Objectives:
- To divert one Million Acre Feet (MAFT) of floodwaters of Narmada to Saurashtra region and fill up 115 reservoirs of Saurashtra through a 1,126-kilometre-long network of giant pipelines;
- To resolve the water related problems of an area;
- First Phase of this program around 10 dams will be filled with the water of Narmada River. This will fill up with the reservoirs of the Rajkot, Jamnagar and Morbi districts.
- This plan did not require any acquisition of farmers’ lands because instead of open canals, SAUNI project has involves the usages of pipe canals
- Also an excess of 115 dams will be filled up near the Sourashtra region for irrigation and drinking purpose. The water in these rivers will come from the Sardar Sarovar dam.
- It involves laying a 1,125-km network of pipelines at a cost of Rs 12,166crore to carry Narmada water to these dams, and irrigate 4.13lakh hectares (ha) land.
- The pipelines in the SAUNI project are underground, which means that no land needs to be acquired. The pipes are huge of diameter 3 m to 500 mm. The pumping stations are being constructed on the government land.
The
project has four trunk pipelines – namely Link 1, 2, 3 and 4. These will take
water to the 115 dams in Saurashtra’s 11 districts –
- Link 1- which is 180 km long will start from the Machhu II dam in Morbi district. It will cut across Jamnagar, Morbi and Devbhoomi Dwarka districts, and will take water to 30 dams.
- Link 2 (253 km)- off takes from Limdi Bhogavo II dam in Surendrangar, and lands in Raydi dam in Khambha taluka of Amreli district. It will supply water to 17 dams.
- Link 3 (245 km)- starts from Dholi Dhaja dam in Surendranagar and ends at Venu I dam in Upleta taluka of Rajkot district. It will fill 28 dams along its length.
- Link 4 will start from Limdi Bhogavo II dam and end at Hiran II dam in Talala taluka of Gir Somnath district.
