National:
  • The Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik on launched 'Nirman Kusuma' programme to provide financial assistance to the children of the construction workers for their technical education in the state. 'Nirman Kusuma' will help fulfil the dreams of the construction workers' children. The scheme would provide financial assistance to the children of construction workers for their education in Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics.

International:
  • President Ram Nath Kovind has reached Tajikistan on a three-day visit to Central Asian Country. He arrived in Dushanbe and was received by Deputy Prime Minister of Tajikistan Zokirzoda Mahmad Toir. 

Defence:
  • Bilateral maritime exercise JIMEX-18 between India and Japan commenced in Visakhapatnam.The third edition of JIMEX will witness the participation of the Japanese ships, under the command of Rear Admiral Tatsuya Fukada, commander of Escort Flotilla-4 (CCF-4).

Agreement:
  • A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Ministry of Railways of the Republic of India and the Joint Stock Company ‘Russian Railways’ on the sidelines of India-Russia Summit on 5th October, 2018.The MoC intends to carry forward the activities taken up under the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two countries on 24th December, 2015.
  • The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)  signed an MoU with the UN Environment for coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development.  The agreement aims to cover all major areas of interest common to both CII and UN Environment.

New Launching:
  • The Karnataka Department of Social Welfare has launched Unnati, a scheme to foster entrepreneurs working on rural and social impact technologies. As part of the scheme, the department will invest up to Rs 20 crore to create end-to-end support infrastructure for start-ups and entrepreneurs from a marginalised background.

Financial News:
  • The Reserve Bank of India issued guidelines for operating Electronic Trading Platforms (ETPs) to transact in eligible instruments. Trading on electronic platforms is being encouraged across the world as it enhances pricing transparency, processing efficiency and risk control.As per the recently released norms  ETPs will mean any electronic system, other than a recognised stock exchange, on which transactions in eligible instruments. ETP Operator’ shall mean an entity authorised by the Reserve Bank to operate an ETP under these Directions.

Awards:
  • The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) has won the ‘ISSA Good Practice Award’ for Administrative Solution for Coverage Extension at the “Regional Social Security Forum for Asia and the Pacific” held at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia recently.
  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2018 to William D. Nordhaus “for integrating climate change into long-run macroeconomic analysis”.
  • The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award Paul M. Romer “for integrating technological innovations into long-run macroeconomic analysis.”

Sports:
  • Richie Benaud will be posthumously honoured as ‘Legend’ by Sport Australia Hall of Fame.Benaud, a former Australia captain who became one of the most loved voices of cricket after his playing days, will be the 40th Legend of Australian Sport and the third cricketer to be bestowed the prestigious annual honour.
  • India’s Keerthana Pandian has won the girls’ title in the IBSF World Under-16 Snooker Championships. In the final in St Petersburg, Russia, Keerthana outclassed her Belarussian rival Albina Leschuk 3-1.

Obituary:
  • Eminent Gandhian Natwar Thakkar, popularly known as ‘Nagaland’s Gandhi’, died in a private hospital here on Sunday after a brief illness, family sources said.Natwar Thakkar, a Padma Shri awardee, had founded the Nagaland Gandhi Ashram at Chuchuyimlang.
