National:
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday launched ‘Swachhata Hi Seva Movement’, saying the movement aims at fulfilling Bapu’s dream of a Clean India.PM Modi wrote to almost 2,000 citizens from different walks of life, inviting them to be a part of the cleanliness drive.
  • In western Odisha, the festival of Harvest Nuakhai is being celebrated.After harvest of new paddy of this season, rice has been processed and offered to Goddess Samaleswari.After this offering people of Western Odisha have arranged get together of family and friends Nuakhai Vetghat as a festival.
  • Union Minister of Textiles Smriti Zubin Irani Friday presented ‘Shilp Guru’ and National Award to Master craft persons at a function held at Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh.Eight ‘Shilp guru’ and 25 National awards were presented for the year 2016. Shilp Guru’ is the highest award in the Handicraft sector in India.

Celebration of the DAY:
  • The International Day of Democracy is observed globally on 15th September.The theme for IDD is 'Democracy under Strain: Solutions for a Changing World'. The day was observed for the first time in 2008. 
  • Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya's birthday is celebrated on 15 September as Engineer's Day.

Financial News:
  • Inflation-based on wholesale price index (WPI) eased to 4.53% in August on account of decline in the prices of food commodities such as vegetables and pulses. WPI inflation stood at 5.09% in July and 3.24% in August last year.As per data released on Friday, food articles registered deflation at 4.04% during the month under review while deflation in vegetables, pulses and fruits was 20.18%, 14.26% and 16.40%, respectively.
  • The government has announced an array of steps to check the rising Current Account Deficit (CAD), and the fall in rupee.The steps include removal of withholding tax on rupee-denominated bonds known as Masala bonds issued till March next year, relaxation for Foreign Portfolio Investment (FPI), and curbs on non-essential imports. 
  • The RBI on Friday said it will purchase Government Securities (G-Secs) under Open Market Operations (OMO) for ₹10,000 crore on September 19.The move is based on the central bank’s assessment of prevailing liquidity conditions and the durable liquidity needs going forward.
  • India’s overall exports (Merchandise and Services combined) in April-August 2018-19 (as per the RBI Press Release) are estimated to be USD 221.83 Billion, exhibiting a positive growth of 20.70% over the same period last year. Overall imports in April-August 2018-19 are estimated to be USD 269.54 Billion, exhibiting a positive growth of 21.01% over the same period last year.
