  • Rising food prices pushed India’s retail inflation in December to 5.21%, intensifying pressure on RBI to raise policy rates in the next few months. The Data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) on Friday showed the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) rose to 8.4% in November from 2% in October; inflation measured by the Consumer Price Index (CPI) accelerated to 5.21% in December from 4.88% a month ago.
  • China on became Nepal’s second internet service provider, breaking India’s monopoly in providing internet access to the Himalayan Kingdom. The Hong Kong and Beijing based China Telecom Global (CTG) — a company formed in 2012 — has teamed up with Nepal Telecom to provide alternate cyber-connectivity to Nepal.
  • American and Japanese military forces have launched joint exercise named Iron Fist. The 13th annual Iron Fist exercises kicked off in the U.S. western state of California. 
  • 4TH ASEAN-India Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture & Forestry held in Delhi.
  • Dharwad Smart City in Karnataka will have 250 smart poles to charge electric vehicles. The poles, which are expected to cost Rs. 10 lakh each.
  • IDFC Bank, Capital First boards approve merger, V Vaidyanathan to become CMD of merged entity.
  • The Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE)’s India International Exchange listed the first bond on its Global Securities Market yesterday. The bonds issued by Indian Railways Finance Corporation (IRFC) are one of the highest credit rated bonds issued by an Indian corporate and has been IRFC’s first foray into the Green Bond market.
  • India has signed an MoU with the United Kingdom to enable the return of illegal Indian migrants within a month of their detection by authorities abroad.
  • Indian Famous Actress Kajol, an active supporter of eradicating preventable deaths from hygiene-related issues, has become an advocacy ambassador for a Swachh Aadat Swachh Bharat initiative.

  • The Supreme Court collegium has recommended the name of senior advocate Indu Malhotra as the first woman lawyer to be directly appointed as a judge of the apex court. She will be the seventh woman judge since independence to make it to the Supreme Court. At present, Justice R Banumathi is the lone woman judge in the apex court.
  • Baldev Raj, the director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bengaluru, and a renowned administrator of nuclear power technologies in the country, passed away.
  • UN Environment and WHO agree to major collaboration on environmental health risks.
  • 5th Bilateral Meeting on cooperation in the field of Traditional Systems of Medicine between India and Malaysia held in New Delhi.

  • The 42nd Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), PSLV-C40, was launched successfully on Friday by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from the First Launch Pad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota and it placed 31 satellites across two orbits.
  • ISRO is set to conduct a "bungee jump" on Chandrayaan-2, India's second Moon mission, where its 500-kg landing module would be lowered from 100 metres at Mahendragiri hills, Tamil Nadu.
  • Federal Bank has entered into a strategic partnership with Hedge Equities Ltd for providing Portfolio Investment Scheme (PIS) services to NRIs.
  • Preet Kaur Gill, Britain's first woman Sikh Member of Parliament (MP) has been elevated to the Shadow Cabinet by the Opposition Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn.
  • Bollywood megastar Shah Rukh Khan will get the Crystal Award at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting in Davos, Khan will get the award for "his leadership in championing children's and women's rights in India," the World Economic Forum (WEF) said.
