Tata AIA Life's Eazy connect chatbot extends customer service to social media platforms

  • Tata AIA Life announced the launch of “Eazy Connect” a servicing tool for Social Media. The chatbot will also be available through Social Media platforms like Facebook Messenger, Twitter DM, Web chat and Whatsapp. The Chatbot developed to respond to the most frequently asked queries will provide 24/7 service.
HDFC Life, Apollo Munich together launch combi product for health & life insurance

  • Private life insurer HDFC Life and standalone health insurer Apollo Munich General Insurance have launched a combination (combi) product that will have features of both life insurance and health insurance under one platform. With this, the two insurance companies are also exploring opportunities to partner for combi products in future, as also research.

Mongolian Parliament confirms Ukhnaa Khurelsukh as new Prime Minister

  • The Mongolian Parliament on Wednesday confirmed Ukhnaa Khurelsukh as the country's new Prime Minister. His confirmation comes after Jargaltulga Erdenebat was voted out of office last month over allegations of corruption and incompetence. Khurelsukh previously served in the army and joined the parliament as a member in 2000.
Param Shah appointed as FICCI UK Director

  • The apex industry body, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) announced appointment of Param Shah as the new Director for the United Kingdom (UK) operations. Shah will succeed Pratik Dattani whose tenure with FICCI ended recently.

Donald Trump is most followed world leader on Twitter, Narendra Modi third

  • Donald Trump is now the world’s most followed leader on Twitter, while Narendra Modi is the third, according to the latest report by Twiplomacy, a Burson Marsteller research project that tracks the use of Twitter by governments and international organisations.
  • Trump overtook Pope Francis by a few thousand followers to occupy the first place in Twiplomacy’s October report. 
DLF's Kushal Pal Singh tops Hurun Real Estate rich list

  • DLF Chairman Kushal Pal Singh is the richest real estate tycoon in India with a fortune of 23,460 crore, according to Grohe Hurun India Real Estate Rich List. He is followed by Lodha Group's Mangal Prabhat Lodha with a wealth of 18,610 crore. Smita V Crishna of Godrej Properties is the richest woman on the list with 2,210 crore wealth.
Gujarat first state to slash VAT on fuel prices

  • Ahead of the state assembly elections, the state government has cut value-added tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel, making it the first state to follow the Centre's directions to do so.

  • The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) would set up a research centre in Guwahati for startups, academicians, environmentalists and entrepreneurs.

Centre clears credit limit of Rs 28,263 crore for Punjab for paddy procurement

  • The Centre on Thursday sanctioned a Cash Credit Limit (CCL) of Rs 28,262.84 crore for procurement of paddy for Punjab in the Kharif marketing season 2017-18.
  • A government release said CM Amarinder Singh’s personal intervention in the matter facilitated the release of the CCL, which is required to ensure timely payment to farmers against their crop.  Amarinder has been taking up the issue with union agriculture and finance ministers on a regular basis and had met both again this week in New Delhi.

  • With temperatures dropping and air quality dipping in Delhi, environment activists have raised a red flag regarding air quality ahead of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup, which starts on Friday.
  • “The six cities hosting the tournament — New Delhi, Navi Mumbai, Goa, Kochi, Guwahati and Kolkata — share dangerous levels of air pollution that threaten the health of spectators and athletes,” activists said. Concentrations of coarse particulate matter (PM10) in these cities regularly break international standards. Even the least polluted of these cities breach World Health Organization recommendations that PM10 should not exceed 50µg/m3 over a 24-hour period,” a statement issued by Greenpeace India said.

FIFA U-17 World Cup: World Body Launches Hindi Twitter Account

  • World football's governing body, FIFA has launched a Hindi twitter account of the U-17 World Cup, which begins on Friday. The U-17 World Cup, the first-ever FIFA competition to be hosted by India, launched the twitter account -- @FIFAHindi to cater to football fans in the most widely spoken language in the country.
US Backs India On 'One Belt One Road', Says It Crosses 'Disputed Territory'

  • The Trump administration today threw its weight behind India's opposition to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), saying it passes through a "disputed territory" and no country should "put itself into a position of dictating" the Belt and Road initiative.
  • India skipped the Belt and Road Forum (BRF) in May this year due to its sovereignty concerns over the nearly 60 billion dollar CPEC, a flagship project of China's prestigious One Belt One Road (OBOR), which passes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

US team breaks record for most accurate measurement of time

  • University of Colorado researchers have built the world's most accurate atomic clock, breaking their own record. Researchers packed 10,000 strontium atoms into a 3D grid at 1,000 times the density of 1D clocks, making it 20 times faster in time measurement. The 3D cube trapped using lasers at -273 ºC, measures time by counting the atoms' oscillations.

Saudi Arabia agrees to buy Russian S-400 air defense system

  • Saudi Arabia has agreed to buy Russian S-400 surface-to-air missile systems, Saudi-owned al-Arabiya television reported on Thursday.
  • The report came during a visit by Saudi King Salman to Moscow.
  • The countries also signed a memorandum of understanding to help the kingdom in its efforts to develop its own military industries, a statement from state-owned Saudi Arabian Military Industries said.
Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase II Gets  300 Million Euro

  • The Government of India and European Investment Bank (EIB) on Thursday signed a Finance Contract for lending of € 300 million (about Rs 2,293 crore) for Bangalore Metro Rail Project Phase II Line R6. The agreement was signed by S. Selvakumar, Joint Secretary (BC), Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance on behalf of the Government of India and Andrew McDowell, Vice President, EIB, on behalf of the EIB.

India, Ethiopia sign agreements on trade, communication

  • India and Ethiopia on Thursday signed agreements on trade, communication and media to boost bilateral ties as President Ram Nath Kovind held talks with his Ethiopian counterpart Mulatu Teshome.

India, Djibouti sign pact on bilateral consultations. The agreement to establish the consultations was signed in the presence of President Ram Nath Kovind and his Djiboutian counterpart Omar Guelleh.

  • India and Djibouti agreed on Wednesday to establish regular Foreign Office-level bilateral consultations with an accord signed in this regard during President Ram Nath Kovind’s visit here.
  • The agreement to establish the consultations was signed in the presence of Kovind and his Djiboutian counterpart Omar Guelleh.
  • Kovind thanked Guelleh for his country’s support during Operation Rahat for evacuating Indians from war-torn Yemen in 2015, and also discussed cooperation in the maritime and renewable energy domains.

  • Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India in collaboration with Ministry of Culture and Seher presents the first ever ASEAN-India Music Festival from October 6th-8th 2017 at Purana Quila in New Delhi. The Festival is being organised to celebrate the 25th year anniversary of ASEAN-India Dialogue Relations. The theme for this commemorative year "Shared Values, Common Destiny” along with this Music Festival aims to boost cultural influences among the peoples of the ASEAN member states and India.

Gauri Lankesh becomes first Indian journalist to win Anna Politkovskaya Award

  • Kannada journalist Gauri Lankesh, a strident critic of religious extremism who was shot dead last month, has been awarded a prestigious global award, given in the memory of a slain Russian reporter and political activist.
  • Lankesh, 55, shared the Reach All Women in WAR (RAW in WAR) Anna Politkovskaya Award with Gulalai Ismail, 31, a Pakistani peace activist who has faced death threats for speaking out against the Taliban.
Nobel Peace Prize 2017 awarded to International Campaign ICAN to Abolish Nuclear Weapons

  • A nuclear disarmament group has won the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize for its decade-long campaign to rid the world of the atomic bomb.The organisation is receiving the award for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons and for its ground-breaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons

Pooja Kadian hands India its first gold in Wushu World Championships

  • Pooja, an ace Central Reserve Police Force's (CRPF) Wushu champion, finished on top of the podium in the 75 kg women's Sanda Category after defeating Evgeniya Stepanova of Russia in the final.
India bag 37 gold medals, finish second in Asia Masters meet

  • India has finished second in the recently-concluded 20th Asia Masters Athletics Championships in Rugao, China by bagging 37 gold medals in the event. The 200-odd member Indian contingent finished the event with a total of 146 medals including 43 silver and 66 bronze. The event also saw former flying officer of Indian Air Force, 76-year-old Shivnath earning 4 bronze medals.
