History:
The Sahitya
Akademi Award is a literary honor in India. Sahitya Akademi, India’s
National Academy of letters, annually confers on writers of the most
outstanding books of literally merit published in any of the major 24 Indian Languages including English recognized
by the Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi. Government of India established this
organization in 12th March, 1954. The award comprises a plaque and
cash prize of Rs. 1, 00,000. The
plaque awarded by the Sahitya Akademi was designed by the Indian Film-maker Satyajit Ray.
