Few STATIC GK Facts about Census
  • Arthashastra of Maurya Period is the Oldest Record of Census. 
  • First Formal Census of India was done in 1872. 
  • First Regular Census was done in 1881.
  • Total 15 Censuses were done in India. 
  • The Short Diving year of Population is 1951. 
  • The long Diving year of Population is 1921. 
  • The slogan of Census 2011 is “Our Census, Our Future”. 
  • Rs. 22,000 Million was the total expenditure of the Census 2011 while the Per Capita Expense on Census was Rs. 18.19. 
  • The age of Indian Citizen, who would be provided Unique ID number, must be 15 years according to the Data on the National Population Register. 
  • The Census 2011 was based on Biometric Database and a National Population Register was formed. 
  • Total Manpower those are engaged in the Census is approximately 2.7 Million. 
  • 8000 Ton of Papers are used. 
  • On 1st April, 2010 the Census – 2011 was formally launched. 
  • On 31st March, 2011 the Interim Data of Census 2011 was published and on 30th April, 2013 the final Data was published. 
  • According to the Census -2011, the number of States and UTs are 36, number of districts are 640, number of blocks are 5924 and number of cities are 7936.



Indian Census Report 2011
  • The total Population of India based on Census- 2011 are 1,21,05,69, 573. The population is equal to the population of Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh and USA. 
  • The Population of India is 17.5% of the total Population of World. 
  • The male population of India are 6231218543 which are 51.47% of total population of India. 
  • The female population of India are 587447730 which are 48.53% of total population of India. 
  • Uttar Pradesh is the highest populated state of India and Delhi is highest populated Union Territory of India. 
  • Sikkim is the lowest populated state of India and Lakshadweep is lowest populated Union Territory of India. 
  • The total Children (0- 6 years) population of India is 13.6 % of the total population while the percentage of male children is 13.8 % and female children is 13.4 %. 
  • The sex ratio of Children is 919 females per 1000 males.
Population Growth of India in 2011 –
  • Decadal Growth of Population is from 2001 to 2010 – 181969458 (Rate 17.64%). 
  • Decadal Growth of Male Population is from 2001 to 2010 – 90965071 (Rate 17.1%) 
  • Decadal Growth of Female Population is from 2001 to 2010 – 90994276 (Rate 18.3%). 
  • The state with highest decadal Growth is Uttar Pradesh while the state with lowest decadal growth is Sikkim.
Sex Ratio of 2011 –
  • Sex Ratio in India is 943 female 1000 male as per Census – 2011. 
  • Kerala is the state with highest sex ratio (1084 female per 1000 male) and Haryana is the state with lowest Sex Ratio (879 female per 1000 male).
Literacy Ratio of 2011 –
  • The literacy rate of India is 73% while the male literacy rate is 80.9 % and female literacy rate is 64.6%. 
  • The state with highest literacy rate is Keral (94%) and with lowest literacy rate is Bihar (61.8%). 
  • The state with highest male literacy rate is Keral (93%) and with lowest male literacy rate is Bihar (71.2%). 
  • The state with highest female literacy rate is Keral (92.1%) and with lowest male literacy rate is Bihar (51.5%).
Population Density – 2011 -
  • The Population Density of India in 2011 is 382 person per square kilometre. 
  • Bihar is the state which has the highest population density (1106 person per square km). 
  • Delhi is the UT which has the highest population density (11320 person per square km). 
  • Arunachal Pradesh is the state which has the lowest population density (17 person per square km).
Rural – Urban Population of 2011 –
  • Total Population of India is 121 Crore. 
  • The Rural Population of India is 83.3 Crore (68.8%). 
  • The Urban Population of India is 37.7 Core (31.2%). 
  • The Decadal increase in urban population (2001-2011) is 9.1 Crore (31.8%). 
  • The Decadal increase in rural population (2001-2011) is 9.05 Crore (12.18%). 
  • The state with highest urban population is Goa (62.2%). 
  • The state with lowest urban population is Himachal Pradesh (10%).
Population of Scheduled Caste – 2011 –
  • Total population of Scheduled Caste – 2011 is 201378086 (16.6%). 
  • The male population of Scheduled Caste – 2011 is 103535165 (16.6%). 
  • The female population of Scheduled Caste – 2011 is 97842921 (16.7%). 
  • Uttar Pradesh is the state having highest Population of Scheduled Caste (41357608 – 20.54%). 
  • Mizoram is the state the state having lowest Population of Scheduled Caste (1218 – 0.0006%). 
  • Punjab is the state having highest Population Rate of Scheduled Caste (31.8%). 
  • Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh is the state having lowest Population Rate of Scheduled Caste (0%).
Population of Scheduled Tribe – 2011 –
  • The total population of the Scheduled Tribes is 104281034 (8.6%). 
  • The total male population of the Scheduled Tribes is 52409823 (8.4%). 
  • The total female population of the Scheduled Tribes is 51871211 (8.8%).
  •  The State with highest ST Population is 15316784 (14.69%). 
  • The State with lowest ST Population is Punjab and Haryana is 0%.
  •  The state with highest ST population percentage is Mizoram (94.4%).
