West Bengal wins prestigious UN Public Service Award.

  • The West Bengal government is among the winners to receive the prestigious UN Public Service Award today for its initiative to combat child marriage and ensure education to the girl child in the state.
  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee received the 2017 UN Public Service Award at a ceremony held in The Hague, Netherlands on behalf of her government for the Kanyashree Prakalpa initiative that sought to reduce the high child marriage rates and low female education rates in the state.
  • Through the initiative, cash was deposited into the bank account of girls for every year they remained in school and were unmarried.


India, Russia finalize new roadmap for defence cooperation.

  • India and Russia have finalized a roadmap to further boost bilateral defence cooperation, which ranges from joint development of futuristic weapon systems to a major upgrade of military-to-military ties.
  • This came during the 17th India-Russia inter-governmental commission on military-technical cooperation, which was co-chaired by defence minister Arun Jaitley and his Russian counterpart General Sergey Shoygu in Moscow on Friday.


GST: Govt launches webpage to facilitate IT, electronic goods taxpayers.

  • In order to ensure preparedness for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) roll-out from July 1, the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology has launched a dedicated web page for facilitating taxpayers with regard to addressing issues related to IT services and electronic goods.
  • The web page also enables filing of grievances in relation to the implementation of GST, it added.

Intellecap CEO Nisha Dutt gets social entrepreneur of year award.

  • Nisha Dutt, Chief Executive Officer of Hyderabad-based Intellecap has been honoured with the “Social Entrepreneur of the Year” award at The 7th Asian Awards in London.
  • She is the first Indian woman leader to have been conferred with this recognition. This award has been presented to her for leading Intellecap to become a globally known enterprise that focuses on social capital and impacts the under served communities.
  • As CEO, Nisha guides the global positioning of Intellecap business. Her key contribution has been integrating technology with challenges of healthcare, financial services, incubation and conceptualizing programs such as Innovations Labs and Credit-tree, according to a press release.


History made as NASA launches world’s lightest satellite designed by 18-year old Indian student.

  • In a historical move that will give GenerationNext in a significant boost, the US space agency NASA launched what has been dubbed as the world’s lightest satellite. 
  • It has been built by an 18-year old Tamil Nadu student and his team. The boy’s name is Rifath Sharook and the satellite has been called Kalamsat, after the most popular former President APJ Abdul Kalam who was himself one of the most distinguished scientists in India.
  • The little satellite weighs in at just about 64 grams. This tiny satellite was flown into space in a NASA rocket from a facility in Wallops Island, according to news agency ANI.

Govt announces 30 Smart Cities, Thiruvanathapuram tops list.

  • Thirty cities were added to the Centre's Smart Cities Mission and a total investment of Rs. 57,393 crore was announced by Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Friday, taking the total number of smart cities to 90.
  • The announcement marks the second anniversary of the launch of the Smart Cities Mission.
  • Among the selected cities, Thiruvananthapuram topped the list.

US approves sale of 22 Guardian drones to India.
  • The US has cleared the sale of 22 unmanned Guardian drones to India.
  • The deal, estimated to be worth $2to 3 billion, has been approved by the State Department, the sources said.
  • The decision has been communicated to the Indian government and the manufacturer by the State Department, according to the informed government sources.
The Union Govt launches index to rank 116 cities on quality of life.
  • The centre has launched a liveability index which will rank the country’s 116 major cities on the basis of the quality of life they offer.
  • Launching the first ‘City Liveability Index’, urban development minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said it will cover cities with population above one million, including the capital cities.
  • The first-of-its-kind index will enable the cities know where they stand in terms of the quality of life and the interventions required to improve it.
The State Government of Maharashtra is going to launch ‘My Plant’ mobile application for tree plantation.
  • Maharashtra forest minister Sudhir Mungantiwar has announced that a mobile app named ‘My Plant’, which would help in recording data about tree plantations in the state, would be launched on July 1.
  • Using this app, people and organisations can feed the data about the saplings they have planted with the forest department, which would help it in creating a database of trees.
  • The forest department has set a target of planting four crore saplings through public participation between July 1 and 7.
